What are dated futures?
Futures instruments are agreements to buy or sell an asset at a pre-set future time. At the expiry date, futures will "settle" at the underlying spot price. What that means is that longs will sell, and shorts will buy at the settlement price at expiry.
Once buyers or sellers enter these contracts, they can either close out on the market where they bought, or wait till settlement.
